Post Memory has to match?
Quick question fellas.
I'm going to upgrade from 4GB (2x2) to 8Gb (4x2)
Should I use all the same brand, model#, etc.?
are there advantages / disadvantages?
I'm just not sure what's kosher.
thanks in advance.

You should use the same brand and they same set. As in purchase all of he 8 GB at once. You should do this so that the Memory will run in Dual Channel. Dual Channel basically makes the memory run it its full potentional.

You can buy any brand of RAM, but make sure it is all the same speed, or all of your RAM will run at the lowest stick speed, say you have 2000mhz memory and you put in a stick that is 1600mhz, the ram has to match that, so all of your RAM will run at 1600mhz.

EDIT: Kb corrected me

If you buy 4x2 you will have 4 sets of 2gb so it would not run in Dual Channel. 2x4 is Dual Channel.

nope. 4x2 or 2x4gb it will still run in dual channel. By default the motherboard will sit automatically to the safest speeds. Usually to the spec of your processor. For example on i7s they set it automatically to 1066 at cas 9 at stock settings.

While most of the time it works, sometimes mixing brands together won't work.
It happened to me once.

I recommend you find the same ram you have now and purchase the extra two dimms u need.
